Ecology Movement
Post-Ecologist Politics by Ingolfur Bluhdorn, X Since the late 1980s, ecological thought and the European eco-movement have gone through a phase of fundamental transformation which has been widely acknowledged but not yet theorised in any satisfactory way. Numerous environmental sociologists have suggested that ecological thinking has come to maturity and that 'ecologism' has firmly established itself as an independent ideology. This book counters such assertions, controversially suggesting that, rather than being the vanguard of a future sustainable society, the eco-movement has become a rearguard battle defending modernist ideals which have largely lost their validity and attractiveness. Post-ecologist Politics insists on the indispensability of theoretical models which may help us to interpret societal processes including environmental change and the multi-level discourse about it. Through the use of critical theory and systems theory (particularly the work of Luhmann), Bluhdorn reinterprets the eco-movement and devises a theory of 'post-ecologism'. This book questions why radical ecological criticism has had such little impact on contemporary society, despite the urgency of the issues it highlights, and offers a challenging theoretical critique of ecological thought itself. Post-ecologist Politics is challenging and thought-provoking reading for all students and scholars interested in the politics and philosophy of the eco-movement.
Beneath the Surface: Critical Essays in the Philosophy of Deep Ecology by Eric Katz, X The philosophy of deep ecology originated in the 1970s with the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess and has since spread around the world. Its basic premises are a belief in the intrinsic value of nonhuman nature, a belief that ecological principles should dictate human actions and moral evaluations, an emphasis on noninterference into natural processes, and a critique of materialism and technological progress. This book approaches deep ecology as a philosophy, not as a political, social, or environmental movement. In part I, the authors compare deep ecology's philosophical ideas with other positions and debates in environmental philosophy and to other schools of thought such as social ecology, ecofeminism, and moral pluralism. In part II, they investigate the connections between deep ecology and other contemporary world views, such as continental philosophy, postmodernism, and non-Western philosophical traditions. The first anthology on deep ecology that is not primarily the work of the movement's followers, "Beneath the Surface offers a rigorous assessment of deep ecology's strengths and weaknesses as a philosophical position.Contributors: John Clark, Deane Curtin, Arran Gare, William Grey, Mathew Humphrey, Knut Jacobsen, Eric Katz, Andrew Light, Jonathan Maskit, Val Plumwood, David Rothenberg, Ariel Salleh, Bron Taylor, Michael Zimmerman.
Ecology movement - The global ecology movement is one of several new social movements that emerged at the end of the sixties; its growth has been stimulated by a widespread acknowledgement of an ecological crisis of our planet. Its story has run alongside the environmental narratives that have reached popular consciousness. Green movement - The Green movement encompasses the Green parties of various countries, and relies on the ideals of the larger ecology movement, peace movement, conservation movement, environmental movement and general trend towards environmentalism. The most extreme members are sometimes called Gaians. Ecosystem ecology - Ecosystem ecology is the study of the movement of energy and matter through ecosystems. It is one of the fundamental disciplines of ecology. Voluntary Human Extinction Movement - The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement, known by its acronym VHEMT (pronounced "vehement"), is a deep ecology organization that endorses the voluntary extinction of the human race. Their motto, "May we live long and die out," briefly summarizes their goal.
