Beneath the Surface: Critical Essays in the Philosophy of Deep Ecology by Eric Katz, X

Beneath the Surface: Critical Essays in the Philosophy of Deep Ecology by Eric Katz, X
The philosophy of deep ecology originated in the 1970s with the Norwegian philosopher Arne Naess and has since spread around the world. Its basic premises are a belief in the intrinsic value of nonhuman nature, a belief that ecological principles should dictate human actions and moral evaluations, an emphasis on noninterference into natural processes, and a critique of materialism and technological progress. This book approaches deep ecology as a philosophy, not as a political, social, or environmental movement. In part I, the authors compare deep ecology's philosophical ideas with other positions and debates in environmental philosophy and to other schools of thought such as social ecology, ecofeminism, and moral pluralism. In part II, they investigate the connections between deep ecology and other contemporary world views, such as continental philosophy, postmodernism, and non-Western philosophical traditions. The first anthology on deep ecology that is not primarily the work of the movement's followers, "Beneath the Surface offers a rigorous assessment of deep ecology's strengths and weaknesses as a philosophical position.Contributors: John Clark, Deane Curtin, Arran Gare, William Grey, Mathew Humphrey, Knut Jacobsen, Eric Katz, Andrew Light, Jonathan Maskit, Val Plumwood, David Rothenberg, Ariel Salleh, Bron Taylor, Michael Zimmerman.

This anthology contains numerous up-to-date, well-related readings on animal rights/animal liberation and environmental ethics--in addition to current topics such as ecological feminism, and practical applications. Approaching its subjects through a set of opposing readings shows the strength and weaknesses of various alternative positions. Readings cover the topics of Judeo-Christian Perspectives, Respect for Nature, The Land Ethic/Deep Ecology, Reconciliation and Defense, Social Ecology and Environmental Racism, and NonWestern Religious and Cultural Perspectives. For individuals concerned about the environment and the non-humans who inhabit it.

Voluntary Human Extinction Movement - The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement, known by its acronym VHEMT (pronounced "vehement"), is a deep ecology organization that endorses the voluntary extinction of the human race. Their motto, "May we live long and die out," briefly summarizes their goal.

Deep Ecology (company) - Deep Ecology is a company started by Kenneth O'Keefe to pursue his passion to protect the ocean realm. Aside from turtle rescues, Deep Ecology conducted one Spotted Eagle Ray rescue and 13 'ghost net' (abandoned or lost fishing nets) recoveries, including two at 200 ft deep.

Deep ecology - Deep ecology is a recent philosophy or ecosophy based on a shift away from the anthropocentric bias of established environmental and green movements. The philosophy is marked by a new interpretation of "self" which deemphasizes the rationalistic duality between the human organism and its environment, thus allowing emphasis to be placed on the intrinsic value of other species, systems and processes in nature.

Ecology movement - The global ecology movement is one of several new social movements that emerged at the end of the sixties; its growth has been stimulated by a widespread acknowledgement of an ecological crisis of our planet. Its story has run alongside the environmental narratives that have reached popular consciousness.
